DigiMedFor Pilot 1 in Vallombrosa: the use of drones and digital traceability systems for sustainable forest management
We are pleased to announce the progress of the follow-up activities within the DigiMedFor – Pilot 1 in Vallombrosa, dedicated to drones and digital traceability for sustainable forest management.
DigiMedFor: a European Project for the Mediterranean forests
With over 25 million hectares of forests and approximately 50 million hectares of other wooded lands, the Mediterranean area is a valuable yet fragile resource. Climate change and socio-economic factors threaten the ability of forests to provide essential ecosystem services. At the same time, the forest-wood supply chain suffers from the limited adoption of modern digital technologies, which are crucial to addressing future challenges.
To meet these needs, DigiMedFor was launched, a European project that aims to modernize the Mediterranean forest-wood supply chain by enhancing traceability, competitiveness, and sustainability. Supported by cutting-edge technologies — from geospatial analysis and artificial intelligence to digital twins and ICT platforms — DigiMedFor promotes sustainable forest management and enables monitoring across the entire value chain, from the forest to the wood industry.
The project, coordinated by the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II, involves 21 international partners, including research institutes, universities, companies, and forest owners. The forests of the Mediterranean Model Forest Network serve as real-world testing grounds for the solutions developed.
TopView’s activities in Pilot 1, Vallombrosa
During this phase, we tested the latest advancements of the DigiMedFor traceability system, in particular our Traceability Box and the real-time tracking platform, designed to support drone-based forest surveys.
📡 The drone collected optical and LiDAR images, while the tags placed in the forest were detected and georeferenced, improving the alignment and accuracy of 3D mapping. These data, integrated into the DigiMedFor Data Traceability Platform, make it possible to combine high-precision environmental surveys with digital information, creating innovative tools for forest management.
🎯 The goal? To foster the development of practical digital solutions for sustainable forest management, enhancing wood traceability and the quality of environmental monitoring.
Upcoming events: dissemination and training
